pH, Hardness and TDS: Why Should you Care?

It is always important to know what is in your water. If you have excessive contaminants in your water it can be unsafe to consume and reduce the life of your appliances that utilize water.

  • pH: This is to determine how acidic or basic your water is. Very acidic water can cause pipe corrosion, which can lead to metals entering your water supply. It is also very hard on your body’s digestive system, which can cause health issues. Very basic water can also damage your pipeline, but it will usually have an unpleasant smell or taste. To help balance pH a simple Calcite Backwashing Filter System can help.

  • Hardness: This is when you have minerals in your water that cause scale to be produced. Scale is the build-up of minerals and can cause damage to your appliances and makes your water feel slimy. If your shower starts to turn a yellowish color and you find yourself cleaning it all the time you may have hard water. Simple faucet filters can fix this issue, but it is recommended to install a water softener, that way your whole house will be protected.

  • TDS: This stands for Total Dissolved Solids. These are particles such as minerals, salts and metals that are within your water. The lower your total dissolved solids, the more effective your water is when digesting. Using a reverse osmosis system will provide you with safe water that your body will appreciate and be able to easily absorb.

Metals, Nitrates/Nitrites, Chlorine: How to Remove?

  • Metals: This kit allows you to test for Copper and Iron. Knowing the amount of these metals you have in your water is very important because if these levels are too high they can be very harmful. Metals like these typically enter drinking water through civic water systems. To reduce the levels of copper and iron in your water, simply install a reverse osmosis system.

  • Nitrates/Nitrites: These nitrogen and oxygen compounds are naturally occurring, but can be dangerous if there are high levels in your water. These compounds can cause many health issues if not taken care of. A reverse osmosis system will reduce these levels and provide you with safe, great tasting water.

  • Chlorine:This is a chemical that some cities use to kill bacteria in water. In very small measurements consuming chlorine will not harm you. If it becomes excessive it can be dangerous to consume and it dries out your hair and skin. This is important to test to ensure your hair and skin remain healthy and that you are consuming safe drinking water. A simple faucet filter for your sink and shower can fix this issue.

Instructions

  1. For every test, draw 250 ml (8oz) of fresh water into a clean cup (do not reuse the same water for multiple tests). Follow instructions for each specified test, listed below.
  2. For the 4 in 1 (pH, Total Alkalinity, Total Chlorine, and Total Hardness) test: Dip strip in water for 5 seconds with gentle back and forth motion. Remove test strip from the water and give it a single brisk shake to remove excess water, then wait 10 seconds. After 10 seconds have passed, match strip with the results chart within the next 10 seconds for most accurate reading. Record matched result for future reference.
  3. For the Iron, (Fe) test: Dip strip in water for 1 second with gentle back and forth motion. Remove test strip from the water and give it a single brisk shake to remove excess water. While waiting 30 seconds after removing the strip from the water, fold the strip at the midpoint back and under the aperture for a white background and more accurate color reading. After 30 seconds have passed, match strip with the results chart within the next 20 seconds for most accurate reading. Record matched result for future reference.
  4. For the Copper, (Cu) test: Dip strip in water for 15 seconds with gentle back and forth motion.
  5. For the 2 in 1 (Nitrate and Nitrite) test: Dip strip in water for 2 seconds with NO motion. After removing test strip from the water DO NOT shake to remove excess water, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds have passed, match strip with the results chart within the next 60 seconds for most accurate reading. Record matched result for future reference.
  6. For the Sulfate test: Dip strip in water for 10 seconds with gentle back and forth motion. Remove test strip from the water and give it a single brisk shake to remove excess water, then wait 20 seconds. After 20 seconds have passed, match strip with the results chart within the next 20 seconds for most accurate reading. Record matched result for future reference.
