What is Chloramine?

Chloramines are introduced into the water supply by water treatment companies because they last longer than free chlorine and serve as antibacterial agents to help purify water. Chloramines untreated can pose some risks to people using that water in their homes, including chlorine taste and smell, dry and irritated skin, and are also labeled as a respiratory irritant. The chemical can be breathed in or absorbed when it's vaporized, in a hot shower for example, which can compromise those with already weak immune systems. In addition to those conditions they are harmful to fish and other aquatic animals. Removing chloramines from your water is bit more difficult than removing chlorine, and requires specialized systems like this one to properly reduce the chemical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this system require any special setup? Details regarding installation can be found in the user guide with every product or here installation guide.

Is chloramine disinfection new? The CDC. recognizes treatment with chloramines reaching back to 1929, "An EPA survey estimated 68 million Americans were drinking water disinfected with chloramine".

Is monochloramine used in water treatment dangerous? On its own there is no evidence supporting it is detrimental to health, however monochloramine can easily shift to and between dichloramine (NHCl2) and trichloramine (NCl3) which are skin and respiratory irritants. It rarely ever is the case that only monochloramine is present in your water and therefore it is important to treat for chloramines.

Does this system have a regeneration cycle? No, there is no backwash or regeneration cycle, this system provides an average of 5-7 years of service for a family of 1-6 people.

Are chloramines just as effective as chlorine at killing bacteria? No, chloramines are a little less effective than free chlorine as a primary disinfectant, however they stay present in the water longer and thus offer the benefit of treating the water for longer during its journey to your home. Chloramine treatment is an especially effective secondary disinfectant treatment option. EPA Clarification
